Castings and forgings for new bascule bridge in Belgium

Last year a new bascule bridge crossing the Boudewijn Canal has been built near Westkapelle, Belgium. Measuring 15 meters high and 1.200 meters long, it is the eye catcher of the A11 project.

THV via Brugge EPC awarded QuayQuip the project to design and supply four cast steel pulleys. These pulleys are welded onto the bridge structure and serve as a connection between the shaft and hydraulic movement system. With this hydraulic movement system, the bridge is able to open in 90 seconds. Each cast steel pulley weighs close to 13 tons and has a diameter of 2.60 meters.

Because the castings are welded onto the steel structure, weldability of the cast steel materials was important. Therefore the requirements of the mechanical values and Cep requirements are stringent. Ceq is the equivalent carbon content value of the cast steel. For good weldability of this specific part, Ceq was not allowed to exceed 0,50.

QuayQuip also supplied five pieces of forged cylinder eyes for the hydraulic cylinder. Suitable for a 340 mm diameter cylinder, it resulted in a forging that exceeded 2 meters in height, with a weight of 3.5 ton each.

Its another great project for QuayQuip to successfully complete!
